Week 11/17 My essential question

My Essential Question:
Why should I integrate psychology with the practice of medicine?

I selected this as my essential question because , as my mentor informed me, he uses a lot of psychology in his practice. The fact that he is using something other than the study of medicine to figure out what is wrong with a patient fascinates me. It excites me to know the answer of what I can expect as a doctor. I will have to know a lot of information about many subjects. It will prepare me for college. Especially because I want to be a pediatric neurologist, the use of psychology can help me. I do feel that the question accurately reflects my desire that I have to find out more about the topic.

11/10 Blog Post

In my mentorship, I follow a doctor around. For me, its more of a visual experience than a hands-on experience. Since I'm not legally able to preform medical tasks, I cannot do basic things such as take blood or vital signs. Although I am not able to do anything, I have learned A LOT from my internship. Many of the patients that come in suffer from psychological issues causing them to have physical problems. There is a reoccurrence of patients that come in stressed and complain of not being able to sleep or over eating because there is so much going on inside their lives. Even though I don't do much , I listen. Listening to the doctor and how the doctor interacts with the patients is a great learning experience. These are tips I can take with me as i move into my residency after college and even into my career.
The one class I've taken in high school to help me in my mentorship would be Human Anatomy A&P.  The study of the body and how everything works has helped me tremendously. After the doctor and I come out of a patents room, if they were an interesting case, he'll ask me what I saw. Most of the times I am able to tell him something about the patient that I picked up on. Its usually something that I probably wouldn't have been able to notice without taking Anatomy . Since my anatomy was an honors class, we went more in depth with the curriculum than a normal class would. I was able to dissect things such as a brain, a eye and a cat. We used those dissections to learn about the different systems of the body and how they work.

11/3 Blog Post

Youth face many challenges in the workplace. Employers often say that young adults come across as too loud and self-absorbed. After they are hired, they become lazy and careless with their work. Youth also tie their appearance in with their identity, and they have a problem when their boss asks them to remove or cut whatever to satisfy the customer.

Social intelligence is defined as The capacity to effectively negotiate complex social relationships and environments,”   or the ability to understand and manage men, women, boys and girls, to act wisely in human relations." Its important because it teaches youth how to quickly adapt to a foregin situation. It shows you how to change as a person to become a better leader.

One thing that stood out to me while reading this article would be the paragraph about the Lt. Colonel who was able to disarm the emotions of the village people in Iraq . He used his Social intelligence to defuse a high intensity situation.

Jorden's Write up Assignment

My Profile-  I am Jorden . I am a senior at Flowery Branch High School. I am the oldest out of my siblings and my cousins. Because I am the oldest, I have always been surrounded by children.
Having to watch them at a family gathering or holiday dinner has let me learn about children. I chose pediatrics because I want to help children. I am always around them, and since "Children are our future," they deserve to be treated with the best medicine. There will always be a demand for Pediatricians because there will always be children.

My Internship- Finding a pediatrician to intern with is very difficult, because the patients are minors and they need extra permission from the parents or guardians. I did not find one, so I went with something better, A general physician. At Oakwood Clinic , in Oakwood, Georgia, Dr. Basil Anderson, practices general medicine. His patients do nothing but RAVE about how great he is and how I will learn a lot from him. So far I have. On a daily basis, we go from room to room visiting patients. After he talks to the patient, we discuss the issue while in the break room. Its a great learning experience because he is asking me questions and allowing me to think on my own to figure out the problem.

My future- Next year I plan on being in college. This mentorship will help me reach my goals by giving my field experience close to my main topic. I will be able to use what I've learned from Dr. Anderson in the real world. I have learned a lot of things about medicine that they aren't able to teach in medical school; Only information you learn on the job and being around a seasoned doctor .

10/14 HMP Assignment

The most surprising and interesting this about my mentorship is the amount of information and advice given to me by my mentor. I knew going into this program that I would shadow and work with the doctor, I did not know how much influence he would have in my life. He has helped me open my eyes to new possibilities in the medical field and going into college. I have been given advice on college interviews up to the MCAT, an exam for the entrance of Medical School.
The routine or "boring" parts of the internship are the most important. You observe the doctor and follow him around, but when it comes down to it those are the times that mean the most. You see how he interacts with patients, how he deals with certain situations including when the patient may be being a little facetious and not telling the whole truth or if they are exaggerating their condition. The boring times are the times for note taking and observing.

10/6 Assignment

I have met the goal of getting into Honors Mentorship. In regards to my internship, I have met the goal of learning more about the Medical field. I have also learned about college and applying from my mentor. I have not changed my goals because none are hard to achieve yet.
During the boring parts of my mentor-ship, I watch my mentor as he interacts with patients. This way I can learn how to treat my patients when I become a doctor .

In my mentorship, everyone seems to be treated equally. When dealing with protocol, no one is excluded. Cell phones are allowed, just not when there is a patient in sight. Their is no real hierarchy in the office, other than the pay scale. The doctor, of course, is always at the top, but he treats his employees with respect and he treats them as his equal. Everyone communicates equally in the office. I am communicated with, more so now than in the beginning because everyone is getting to know me. I am treated a little bit as an outsider, but again it's because I'm new.
The receptionists dress a little more casually than I or the doctor do. I can draw that they have a little more relaxed job and not many patients see them behind the desk. With myself and the doctor, We wear slacks and a nice shirt with nice shoes. We are seen the most by the patients. It does impact our our personal interaction, because if a patient comes and we are in short shorts, flip flops, and a tank top, it looks like we don't really care about them or our job.
I have been able to apply my current skills in my mentorship, by asking the doctor questions, communicating with the doctor if there is something I don't understand.

College is an important decision. Three colleges I would apply to would be :
1. Mercer University-1400 Coleman Avenue, Macon, GA  31207 ,(478) 301-2700
www.mercer.edu

2. Oglethorpe University-4484 Peachtree Road NE, Atlanta, GA  30319,(404) 261-1441
www.oglethorpe.edu

3. Georgia Southern1332 Southern Drive, Statesboro, GA  30458,+ 1 (912) 4784636
www.georgiasouthern.edu

My criteria for a quality program of study would be small classes, personal help from the professors, and many hands on experiences. Mercer and Oglethorpe are small schools that would meet my criteria. Georgia Southern is a little bit larger than I would like. There is an additional entrance requirements. I would like to be a doctor so in order to get into medical school, I will have to take the MCA. To me < I would prefer the college to have some type of sports team. I also would like to have diversity, but I don't want to go to a large school in the city.
Mercer's pre-med program received a B in comparison to the top pre-med programs all over the nation such as Harvard university, UGA, and Princeton University whom all received a B+. I do qualify for the HOPE scholarship that the state of Georgia offers. I am also applying for the Coke-a Cola scholarship , as well as the Bill Gate millennium Scholarship .

Week 3 Assignment

This blog post , written by Tim Elmore, is can be found at http://growingleaders.com/blog/.

1. The article illustrates that sometimes bad interns or bad experiences with interns is not necessarily the interns fault. The college intern may not have been taught the skills to work and live  in the real world. The author refers to an internship as a "twelve- week interview". The employers are observing the interns as potential employees of their company.

2. Some concrete things I can do for my "interview" would be taking initiative, meaning that I should always step up and be willing to do anything for my boss or my co-workers without them having to ask. I should always be ready to step up to the plate. Another concrete thing I can do  is always be excited, enthusiastic, and positive during my year long interview. No employers wants a Debby-downer on their workforce. They want some one who is passionate about working or interning for their company .

3. What I found to be relevant in this article is that there is a lack of adult guidance in lives of many college students when it comes to living and working in the real world. If there was more adults willing to each young adults, like myself, we would be better prepared upon entering college or even starting our first real job.

Week 1

After reading "Getting To Know Your Mentor" and listening to the podcast on how to make a positive first impressions, I found very interesting tips along with some of the same tips in each one. Some of the similar tips are being on time, dressing appropriately, and always have a positive attitude.  I envision myself gaining experience in the work field so that I can be ahead of my peers when I get into college. I will do exactly what my mentor asks of me and take initiative to ask for more. This is preparing me by giving me real world experience before I actually enter the real world.
